Faiths & Feminisms Interfaith Book Circle
Monday, August 3, 7:00-8:30pm Meeting on the first Monday of each month, this open book group seeks to deepen the dialogue between different understandings of, and commitments to, living a life in which faiths and feminisms intersect and inform our work for justice and wholeness. We discuss books that invite us to expand our hearts and minds. Facilitators are group participants of many faiths who are committed to increasing mutual enrichment and understanding. All faiths and all definitions of feminism welcome! Join us this month as we discuss Mending a Torn World, by Maura O'Neill.

 Amy Lanou with Building Bone Vitality

Charis is very excited to welcome author Amy J. Lanou, Ph.D., to talk about her new book, Building Bone Vitality: A Revolutionary Diet Plan to Prevent Bone Loss and Reverse Osteoporosis-- Without Dairy Foods, Calcium, Estrogen, or Drugs.  Young Women* Writers
Monday, August 10 & 24, 5:00-6:15pm This group is open to all young women* writers ages 14-19. Through facilitated writing prompts and supportive critique, participants are encouraged to raise their voices and express themselves through a variety of written mediums. Writers of all skill levels and genres are encouraged to stop in and see if the group works for them. This group meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month from 5-6:15pm.  Writing with Intent
Monday, August 10 & 24, 6:30-8:30pm This facilitated group is open to all writers of fiction and creative non-fiction who want a serious group to provide constructive criticism, motivational exercises, and interpersonal accountability to keep their writing on track. We do monthly exercises and critiques with an eye towards individual improvement and the eventual goal of publication. Writers are encouraged to bring copies of their work to share for critique.  Exploring Genders Through Reading
Wednesday, August 12, 7:00-8:30pm This facilitated book group meets on the second Wednesday of each month to discuss books that explore gender identity and representation. In July we met to discuss the photographs in Femmes of Power: Exploding Queer Femininities, by Del LaGrace Volcano and Ulrika Dahl. Now come join us in August to talk about the essay content of the book.
The first book of its kind, Femmes of Power unsettles the objectifying male gaze on femininity and presents femmes as speaking subjects and high-heeled theorists.

 Excerpt Performance by the Saartjie Project (South)
Thursday, August 13, 7:30-9:00pm The Saartjie Project is an artist collective defying, exploring, and transforming body politics, stereotypes, and the mysticism surrounding the black female body. They use spoken word, song, visual art, dance, and dramatic personae to contextualize the life of Saartjie (Sara) Baartman. The Saartjie Project South is the Southern incarnation of this amazing project, and recently completed their performance debut at Push Push theater. Charis is very excited to host cast members of this collective for a partial performance and discussion of the Saartjie Project and how it can be used to promote healing across communities.

 Erin Dutton with Point of Ignition
Friday, August 14, 8:00-9:30pm Fans of lesbian fiction, take note! Bold Strokes author Erin Dutton is coming to Charis to read from her brand new novel, Point of Ignition, an explosive thriller about the romance between a firefighter and a bar owner suspected of arson. Erin will be happy to sign copies of all her books, so bring your favorites and meet the Nashville-based author as she talks and reads at Charis.

 Akoma Book Club
Saturday, August 15, 10:30am-noon The Akoma Book Club (of Women Healing Women) meets at Charis Books & More on the third Saturday of each month. This book club is open to any woman seeking camaraderie with like-minded women for fun, self-empowerment and growth. Even if you haven't read the book, but are willing to talk about the principles in the book, you can join us for a lively discussion. The book selection for August is The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent, by Esther & Jerry Hicks.

 Kris Radish with The Shortest Distance Between Two Women

A lifelong supporter of women's issues and feminist causes, Kris has written several novels and travels the country to speak about writing and empowerment, encouraging women to dance naked as often as possible. Her new novel, The Shortest Distance Between Two Women, hits the shelf on August 18.  Cliterati Open No-Mic with Anne Webster
Thursday, August 20, 7:30-9:00pm Charis & Cliterati pair up to present an inviting and fierce open mic & reading series on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Hosted by theanarchic spoken word team of Karen G and Theresa Davis, members of the Art Amok Slam Team, this series cultivates the voices of authors, novices and anassortment of poets, songstresses and story tellers. Cliterati is 8 years old and counting, open to all because ALL OPEN MOUTHS HAVE A VOICE.
This month we will feature a performance by Atlanta-based poet & former nurse Anne Webster. After a 25-year nursing career in Atlanta hospitals, Anne's poetry expresses the struggles and triumphs of her experiences, and is collected in her book, A History of Nursing.

Join us in August to talk about Erzulie's Skirt, by Ana-Maurine Lara. Set in the Dominican Republic, Erzulie's Skirt chronicles the lives of Miriam and Michaela as they journey from the campos and poor neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic to the United States via Puerto Rico.
