Faiths & Feminisms: A Charis Interfaith Book Circle
Monday, June 2, 7:00-8:30pm
Meeting on the first Monday of each month, this open book group seeks to deepen the dialogue between different understandings of, and commitments to, living a life in which faiths and feminisms intersect and inform our work for justice and wholeness. We will discuss books that invite us to expand our hearts and minds. Facilitators will be group participants of many faiths who are committed to increasing mutual enrichment and understanding. All faiths and all definitions of feminism welcome!

Urban Sustainability Series

What will a sustainable Atlanta look like? How can we begin to create it? Bring your ideas, skills and experiences to the table and let's get started! We'll work together to create a vision for community survival, comfort and equality in a fuel-scarce world, then plan a series* of workshops to learn and share the skills we need to make it real. Information & Resource Mapping for Activists & Organizations

Often times, the mindset of non-profit organizations and activists is rooted in struggle. And although the mission often does involve a struggle for broader social change, the work itself, and the way that work is accomplished, does not have to feel burdened. Come and learn how you can map and structure your organization's activities, relationships and resources to uncover effective ways to engage the mission so that your work can feel satisfying and efficient. Young Women* Writers
Monday, June 9 & 23, 5:00-6:15pm
This group is open to all young women* writersyoung writers unite ages 14-19. Through faciliated writing prompts and supportive critique, participants are encouraged to raise their voices and express themselves through a variety of written mediums. Writers of all skill levels and genres are encouraged to stop in and see if the group works for them. This group meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month from 5-6:30pm. Writing with Intent
Monday, June 9 & 23, 6:30-8:30pm
This facilitated group is open to all writers of fiction and creative non-fiction who want a serious group to provide constructive criticism, motivational exercises, and interpersonal accountability to keep their writing on track. We will do monthly exercises and critiques with an eye towards individual improvement and the eventual goal of publication. Writers are encouraged to bring copies of their work to share for critique. Navigating Disability, Relationships, & Love

People with and without disabilities (who have experience in the realm of relationships & disability) will lead an interactive community dialogue about how intimate and everyday interactions can be affected by disability. This program is part of a monthly series at Charis that is dedicated to community building around disability and activism. The series is organized and facilitated by disability activists who are part of the Charis community.

Cliterati Open No-Mic Featuring Cindy Emch

Charis & Cliterati pair up to present an inviting and fierce, open mic & reading series on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Hosted by the anarchic spoken word team of Karen G and Theresa Davis, members of the Art Amok Slam Team, this series cultivates the voices of authors, novices and an assortment of poets, songstresses and story tellers. Cliterati is 7 years old and counting, open to all because ALL OPEN MOUTHS HAVE A VOICE.
This month we are proud to feature a performance by Cindy Emch. Cindy co-hosted the Aunty Cindy and Unka Lynnee show with Lynn Breedlove on Pirate Cat Radio from 2004 to 2007, and has been a curator for the National Queer Arts Festival since 1995. Cindy is the founder and co-host of San Francisco's twice-a-month Queer Open Mic, which is a central resource and performance space for the queer literary scene.

Akoma Book Club

The Akoma Book Club (of Women Healing Women) meets at Charis Books & More on the third Saturday of each month. This book club is open to any woman seeking camaraderie with like-minded women for fun, self-empowerment and growth. Even if you haven't read the book... but are willing to talk about the principles in the book, you can join us for a lively discussion. Film Screening & Discussion: The AIDS Chronicles- Here to Represent
Thursday, June 26, 7:30-9:00pm
The AIDS Chronicles - Here to Represent, by Bailey Barash, focuses on the social and cultural impact of HIV/AIDS on the African-American community of Atlanta. These stories, produced from material gathered over the last four years, give insight into the reasons why HIV/AIDS is still a major threat to the black population of urban centers nationwide. Through frank interviews with activists, health educators, and persons with HIV/AIDS, and recorded glimpses into their personal and professional lives, the viewer sees the struggle of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Join us at Charis for a screening of the film, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Bailey Barash.
