Faiths & Feminisms Interfaith Book Circle
Monday, June 1, 7:00-8:30pm
Meeting on the first Monday of each month, this open book group seeks to deepen the dialogue between different understandings of, and commitments to, living a life in which faiths and feminisms intersect and inform our work for justice and wholeness. We discuss books that invite us to expand our hearts and minds. Facilitators are group participants of many faiths who are committed to increasing mutual enrichment and understanding. All faiths and all definitions of feminism welcome! Join us this month as we discuss Wisdom Jesus, by Cynthia Bourgeault.

Stigma No More: Intersections of Disability, Mental Illness, Queerness & Race
Wednesday, June 3, 7:00-8:30pm
Please join us at Charis for the next installment of our Disability Activism Series. Melissa Gordon, who is a traumatic brain injury survivor and queer woman of color, and Adande Lane, a queer woman of color who struggles with mental illness, will co-facilitate this program. They will use poetry, lecture, and interactive small group work to engage audience members in a discussion about the stigmas associated with many of our overlapping identities and experiences. Melissa & Adande will recount some of her own encounters with stigma and discrimination, including lack of access to mental health services and biases in the recovery process. Come ready to discuss tools and strategies for liberation and reclamation!

Young Women* Writers
Monday, June 8 & 22, 5:00-6:15pm
This group is open to all young women* writers ages 14-19. Through facilitated writing prompts and supportive critique, participants are encouraged to raise their voices and express themselves through a variety of written mediums. Writers of all skill levels and genres are encouraged to stop in and see if the group works for them. This group meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month from 5-6:15pm. Writing With Intent
Monday, June 8 & 22, 6:30-8:30pm
This facilitated group is open to all writers of fiction and creative non-fiction who want a serious group to provide constructive criticism, motivational exercises, and interpersonal accountability to keep their writing on track. We do monthly exercises and critiques with an eye towards individual improvement and the eventual goal of publication. Writers are encouraged to bring copies of their work to share for critique. Exploring Genders Through Reading

This facilitated book group meets on the second Wednesday of each month to discuss books that explore gender identity and representation. Join us in June to talk about Wild Seed, by Octavia Butler. Back in print after five years, this is a thrilling paternist novel about a reincarnate & a healer who travel together through exotic lands & centuries of time.

Monica A. Coleman on Postmodern Womanist Theology

Please join us in welcoming author and theology professor Monica A. Coleman to Charis for a discussion of her book, Making a Way Out of No Way: A Womanist Theology. In this book, Monica looks at the experience of three communities, and describes a communal theology that is applicable to Christian churches, African traditional religions, and grassroots organizations. Come hear Monica talk about how womanism, religious scholarship, and process thought can be drawn together into a womanist theology that informs our communities and lives.

An Evening for Sister Audre: Author Event & Silent Auction
Saturday, June 13, 6:30-9:30pm at Oakhurst Baptist Church
Please join Charis at Oakhurst Baptist Church (at the corner of East Lake Drive and Third Avenue in Decatur) for an author event, celebration, and silent auction from 7-9:30 pm on June 13. We will be joined by the editors of I Am Your Sister: Collected and Unpublished Writings of Audre Lorde-- Rudolph P. Byrd, Johnnetta Betsch Cole, & Beverly Guy-Sheftall. A collection of Audre Lorde's non-fiction prose, I Am Your Sister introduces new perspectives on the depth and range of her intellectual interests and commitments to progressive social change. Following the reading and discussion, there will be a reception to celebrate and honor this important book and its amazingly gifted editors. Both before and after the event, guests are invited to participate in a silent auction to benefit Charis Circle, with art, gift certificates, books, jewelry, & more. This event is co-sponsored by ZAMI and SisterSong. Copies of I Am Your Sister are available now at Charis Books & More, and will be for sale at the event. Audience members are asked to bring a gently used or new feminist book to donate to Sistersong in honor of Audre Lorde.

Charis & Cliterati pair up to present an inviting and fierce open mic & reading series on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Hosted by the anarchic spoken word team of Karen G and Theresa Davis, members of the Art Amok Slam Team, this series cultivates the voices of authors, novices and an assortment of poets, songstresses and story tellers. Cliterati is 8 years old and counting, open to all because ALL OPEN MOUTHS HAVE A VOICE.

This book club is open to any woman seeking camaraderie with like-minded women for fun, self-empowerment and growth. Queer Literary Fiction Book Group

This facilitated book group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at Charis to discuss books which feature queer characters/ storylines as well as a strong attention to literary craft and style. Join us in June to talk about Beyond the Pale, by Elena Dykewoman. The books tells the stories of two Jewish women living through times of darkness and inhumanity in the early 20th century, capturing their undaunted love and courage in luminous and moving prose.

40 Years After Stonewall: Transgender Rights Now!
Thursday, June 25, 7:30-9:00pm
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, Human Rights Atlanta (HRA), in collaboration with local LGBTQ communities, would like to bring the T back to the forefront of the TLBGQ movement! A panel discussion will kick off four days of events centered on the human rights issues facing transgender people. Moderated by BT, panelists will talk about police harassment, incarceration, immigration, health care, homeless shelters, bathrooms, immigration, employment discrimination, and respecting gender identity. Bring your respectful curiosity and questions for the discussion to follow! Confirmed panelists include: Cole Thaler (Lambda Legal), Tracee McDaniels (Juxtaposed Center for Transformation), Chanel Haley and Cheryl Courtney-Evans (Transgender Individuals Living Their Truth).
