Make Our Own Movement/ Do It Ourselves
Thursday, November 8, 7:30-9:30pm
As Bamboo Girl points out in the Evolution of a Race Riot zine edited by Mimi Nguyen the radical punk-based DIY movement has not explored whether or not the "Do it Yourself" can go beyond individualism. What about "do it ourselves"? she asks. Inspired by Bamboo Girl's challege and a the need to create sustainable (non-elitist) creative alternatives to capitalist mass production this workshop practices and theorizes the question of how we can make our own movement or DIY together. Participants in this 2 hour workshop will imagine, create, and distribute a collaborative publication. Do to the unreal facilitation skills of Charis-raised publisher and scholar Alexis Pauline Gumbs we will even have time to fully debrief our process and brainstorm how we can bring a little more anarchy into our daily lives and our multiple communities. Alexis Pauline Gumbs is a queer black trouble-maker and a PhD candidate in English, Africana Studies and Women's Studies at Duke University. She is proud to have grown into a writer in the storage closet at Charis Books and More and she is the founder of BrokenBeautiful Press (brokenbeautiful.wordpress.com).

Sister Spit Live @ Charis Books and More
Sunday November 11 at 7pm $10
Sister Spit: The Next Generation is on the road again, with a whole new all-girl lineup of zinesters, fashion plates, novelists, performance artists, slam poets and fancy scribblers. Inspired by the legendary Sister Spit Ramblin' Roadshow of the 90s, Sister Spit: The Next Generation is hauling a vanload of killer underground female talent across the USA (and into Atlanta). The latest gang, including Spit founder Michelle Tea, hits the road in October 2007, a decade after the first Spit van set sail, carrying on the tradition of rowdy, raucous literary adventure. As they journey across the USA, they're joined by a rag tag bunch of special guests - old Spit travelers of yore, and contributors to the brand new feminist fashion anthology, It's So You. Come and meet your new favorite performers!

Dis-Abling the Revolution: Everyday Activism
Thursday, November 29, 7:30-9:00pm
Have you ever had a situation arise where you later went home and came up with a list of all of the witty ways you could have responded, but were too in shock to think of in the moment? Have you ever been in a parking lot and seen a non-disabled person park in an accessible parking space and been unsure as to how to confront them? We will use role playing and group conversations to help brainstorm responses to ableism in our daily lives and interactions. Attendees will participate by sharing everyday scenarios with the group, so we can all brainstorm creative ways to address them in the future. This program came out of Charis Circle's three-part Disability 101 series and is the beginning of an ongoing effort to continue disability programming at Charis. Please join us as we talk about the ways you can be a disability activist in your everyday life! ADA qualified interpreters are available for this program by request only. Please contact Charis Circle no later than Thursday November 15th, so we can accommodate your request (info@chariscircle.org or 404-522-9912).
