Faiths and Feminisms Interfaith Book Circle
Monday, November 2, 7:00-8:30pm
Meeting on the first Monday of each month, this open book group seeks to deepen the dialogue between different understandings of, and commitments to, living a life in which faiths and feminisms intersect and inform our work for justice and wholeness. All faiths and all definitions of feminism welcome! Join us this month to discuss Alice Walker's We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For.

Atlanta Queer Literary Festival and Charis Birthday Kick-off!
Wednesday, November 4, 7:00-9:00pm
The AQLF and Charis will hold a joint reception to kick off the festival and Charis's birthday events, which will be going on simultaneously in Atlanta. The reception will feature performances by the following local women poets: Lisa Allender (emcee), Malika, Krystal Tift, Alice Teeter, Louisa Merchant, Sharon Saunders, Sincere, Charlene Ball and Libby Ware.

Founding the Future: A Conversation with Beverly Guy-Sheftall & Gloria Steinem

Young feminist scholar andactivist Alexis Pauline Gumbs will moderate a discussion with feminist icons Beverly Guy-Sheftall and Gloria Steinem about their places in the history of feminism and the possibilities the future holds.Tickets are $35 for general admission; priority seating is also available. Young Women* Writers
Monday,November 9 & 23, 5:00-6:15pm
This group is open to all young women* writers ages 14-19. Through facilitated writing prompts and supportive critique, participants are encouraged to raise their voices and express themselves through a variety of written mediums. Writers of all skill levels and genres are encouraged to stop in and see if the group works for them. This group meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month from 5-6:15pm. Writing With Intent
Monday, November 9 & 23, 6:30-8:30
This facilitated group is open to all writers of fiction and creative non-fiction who want a serious group to provide constructive criticism, motivational exercises, and interpersonal accountability to keep their writing on track. We do monthly exercises and critiques with an eye towards individual improvement and the eventual goal of publication. Writers are encouraged to bring copies of their work to share for critique. Mab Segrest with "The Milledgeville Mental Hospital and the Georgia Surreal"

Join Southern cultural critic and activist, Mab Segrest, as she presents work from her newest project: "The Milledgeville Mental Hospital and the Georgia Surreal," a social history exploring the relationship bewteen the Georgia State Mental Hospital at Milledgeville, which was the largest state mental hospital in the country by 1950, and the amazing outpouring of creativity by authors of that region such as Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, Alice Walker, and Janisse Ray.

Exploring Genders Book Group

Join us in November to talk about Genders by David Glover and Cora Kaplan. A guide to one of the most contested terms in literary and cultural theory, Genders charts the main lines of contemporary debate surrounding gender.

A Night with Judy Grahn & Minnie Bruce Pratt

We are thrilled to welcome these two lesbian feminist icons and poets for a very special evening of conversation and poetry. Judy Grahn's two most recent books are The Judy Grahn Reader, a wide ranging collection of her work, and a new volume of poetry, Love Belongs to Those Who Do the Feeling. Minnie Bruce Pratt is an activist and author of a number of books of poetry and essays. She is the co-editor of Feminism and War and her newest poetic work focuses on the ways we all survive the current economic crisis. This is sure to be a night to remember!

When Sandi Wisenberg was diagnosed with early-stage cancer, she became Cancer Bitch. Jessica Handler was ten when her younger sister died of leukemia, thirty-two when her sister Sarah died of a rare blood disorder. Her Book, Invisible Sisters celebrates Handler's life with and without her sisters.

Queer Literary Fiction Book Group

This facilitated book group meets each month at Charis to discuss books which feature queer characters/ storylines as well as a strong attention to literary craft and style. This month's book is Lilac Mines by Cheryl Klein. Set in a small town in California's foothills with a 100 year old mystery, this is a quirky, quickly paced story of a young women ending a relationship with another woman and developing a new relationship with herself.
