Faiths & Feminisms Interfaith Book CircleFaiths & Feminisms Interfaith Book Circle
Monday, October 5, 7:00-8:30pm

Meeting on the first Monday of each month, this open book group seeks to deepen the dialogue between different understandings of, and commitments to, living a life in which faiths and feminisms intersect and inform our work for justice and wholeness. We discuss books that invite us to expand our hearts and minds. Facilitators are group participants of many faiths who are committed to increasing mutual enrichment and understanding. All faiths and all definitions of feminism welcome! Join us in October as we discuss The Fifth Sacred Thing, by Starhawk.

Tuesday, October 6, 7:00pm at First Iconium Baptist Church

Ann Wright, one of three State Department officials who resigned in 2003 to protest the Iraq invasion and, since then, one of the peace movement's most powerful voices, will be addressing the unfolding crisis in Afghanistan in commemoration of the 8th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. Join us for a reception at 5:30pm and the program at 7:00pm, followed by Ann signing copies of her book, Dissent: Voices of Conscience Government Insiders Speak Out Against the War in Iraq. This event is co-sponsored by the First Iconium Social Justice Forum, Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition, Atlanta Grandmothers for Peace, Veterans for Peace Atlanta Chapter 125, Charis Circle, and Charis Books & More. This group is open to all young women* writers ages 14-19. Through facilitated writing prompts and supportive critique, participants are encouraged to raise their voices and express themselves through a variety of written mediums. Writers of all skill levels and genres are encouraged to stop in and see if the group works for them. This group meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month from 5-6:15pm. Writing With IntentWriting With Intent
Monday, October 12 & 26, 6:30-8:30pm

This facilitated group is open to all writers of fiction and creative non-fiction who want a serious group to provide constructive criticism, motivational exercises, and interpersonal accountability to keep their writing on track. We do monthly exercises and critiques with an eye towards individual improvement and the eventual goal of publication. Writers are encouraged to bring copies of their work to share for critique. This facilitated book group meets on the second Wednesday of each month to discuss books that explore gender identity and representation. In this provocative collection, pioneers in the field of transgender studies explore how the concept of "trans" changes in the shifting and porous areas between definitions: between young and old, the real and the imaginary, man and woman.

Hosted by the anarchic Cliterati Open No Mic Featuring Karen G and Anne Webster Theresa Davisspoken word team of Karen G and Theresa Davis, members of the Art Amok Slam Team, this series cultivates the voices of authors, novices and anassortment of poets, songstresses and story tellers. Cliterati is 8 years old and counting, open to all because ALL OPEN MOUTHS HAVE A VOICE. This month's featured performer is indie folk singer and national recording artist Ellis! There is a $7 suggested donation to attend this event, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The Akoma Book Club (of Women Healing Women) meets at Charis Books & More on the third Saturday of each month. This book club is open to any woman seeking camaraderie with like-minded women for fun, self-empowerment and growth. Even if you haven't read the book, but are willing to talk about the principles in the book, you can join us for a lively discussion. The book selection for October is The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, by Deepak Chopra.

Calling all aspiring bakers! Help Charis Circle sweeten up the Little 5 Points Halloween Parade. We're having an old-fashioned Halloween Bake Salebake sale and all proceeds will help Charis Circle continue our programming work. Drop off your baked good donations (ready for individual sale) at Charis Books & More on Saturday, October 17 between 2:00 and 4:00pm. This facilitated book group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at Charis to discuss books which feature queer characters/ storylines as well as a strong attention to literary craft and style. Join us in October to talk about ZAMI: A New Spelling of My Name, by Audre Lorde. A chronicle of the author's vivid childhood memories in Harlem to her coming of age in the late 1950s, this biomythography especially relates the linkage of women who helped shape Audre Lorde.
